Fall 2020 Soccer Update

By Madelin Bell, 08/10/20, 9:30AM PDT

Dear Spokane Rapids Players and Families,

We are so grateful for the support of our members and donors throughout this challenging year. You have helped us maintain our facility for community use during a time when outdoor public spaces are needed more than ever. As fall approaches, we must address the continued challenges that the COVID-19 virus poses with a realistic vision, understanding that it is our responsibility to do right by our players, coaches, families, and community members. We have made the difficult decision to cancel the Fall 2020 soccer season and will not register any players or coaches until we can guarantee return to play.

To ensure we are doing our part to respect state and local health officials, support the efforts of our health care workers, and minimize added stress parents are already facing, the Board of Directors agonized over potential options for the Fall 2020 season, unfortunately, due to all of these variables, we determined it is not in our community’s, or our organization’s, best interest to resume recreational soccer play yet. This decision was not one made lightly and reflects multiple factors including, but not limited to, the recent recommendation that the start of the school year be virtual in most districts, as well as the delay of fall sports and extracurriculars at all grade levels.

In addition, despite the options for small group gatherings, we must ask that teams who have played together previously not practice as Spokane Rapids teams. They will not be affiliated with, or insured by, the Spokane Rapids organization or US Club Soccer. We understand that for our users, this is difficult news to hear. It was an incredibly difficult decision to make; one that directly impacts our organization as well as the life and livelihoods of our staff and many members of our community and we want you to know it was not made lightly. We ask for patience and understanding as we navigate these uncharted times and our extended closure.

We will do our best to answer any questions you may have. Beginning August 14th, general communication can be sent to Spokane Rapids staff will be unavailable until Spring 2021 when we hope to resume play and fill our fields with soccer again!
